Although I don’t write about it all too often, I absolutely love trying new beauty products. Pretty much every time I pop into town, I have to have a snoop around the makeup counters in Boots and Superdrug, and although I am quite good at restraining myself, one or the other product will find its way into my basket every now and again.
It wasn’t too difficult to pick my favourites of the year – I simply chose the ones that I packed every time I went away. If this doesn’t mean they’re a true staple, then I don’t know what does!
My newest discovery are lip products. Until about a year ago, I never used to put anything on my lips at all, but now I can definitely appreciate how the right lip colour can complete a look or put a colourful accent to an otherwise muted look. The NYX Liquid Suedes are an absolute staple and by far my favourite lip product found on the high street. My perfect everyday brown/nude colour is ‘Sandstorm’; for a more vampy look I go for ‘Vintage’. I recently also picked up ‘Cherry Skies’, a beautiful deep red (worn in the photos above), which rivals my trusty Rimmel Kate Moss lipstick in ‘107’, and the Liquid Suede Metallic Matte in ‘New Era’; a beautifully deep bronze colour with a gold hue/shimmer (this feels a bit more dry on the lips than the others but is an absolutely beautiful shade, so I can live with that).
As for high-end lipsticks, Charlotte Tilbury has got to be my favourite. Her Matte Revolution lipstick in ‘Glastonberry’ and the corresponding lip liner in ‘Bad Romance’ have been by my side for two autumns and winters now, and I absolutely love this combination for a dark berry lip!
The majority of my eyeshadow stash consists of gold, bronze and brown colours, and this palette is no exception. The NYX ‘Warm Neutrals’ palette is perfect for everyday wear as well as being buildable for a bronze smokey evening look. My favourite mascara, which I have been using all year without fail, is the Too Faced ‘Better Than Sex’ mascara, which gives me length, volume and density. However, it does give me panda eyes if I put it on my lower lashes, and that’s where the Clinique ‘Bottom Lash’ mascara comes in. The wand is teeny tiny but coats all lashes individually, complementing the voluminous look of my top lashes.
For my face, I have been loving the Kevyn Aucoin Sculpting powder in ‘Light’, which I bought at the end of last year. I don’t use it every day but if I want to give my face a bit more structure, I use this to contour. The blush is a NYX High Definition one in ‘Intuition’, which is a beautiful mauve colour with a hint of gold shimmer – you could use this as a blush and highlight in one for a subtle look, but I like to go all out and use an extra highlighter on top.
This is a wonder product. The Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray is volume in a can. If you ever feel like your hair is too flat or lacking texture, this is your guy. A few pumps of this are enough, even for longer hair, and I found this really useful to create volume and texture for a messy bun, too! It smells divine and even the small bottle will last you a good while.
